REFLECTIONS OF A WAR VETERAN TOUR OF DUTY: The image of Second World War veteran Frank (Bert) Cramer is reflected in a glass case in which the Burlington resident keeps mementoes from his time spent serving with the No. 1 Tunnelling Company of the Royal Canadian Engineer Corps. The fairly obscure military unit of Canadian diamond drillers was enlisted for such work as boobytrapping allied airfields with explosives that could be detonated should the enemy gain control, preparing tank traps, reinforcing strategic bridges, locating and detonating landmines and unexploded bombs, and drilling for sources of water and minerals such as iron that could be used for making weapons.(© 2008 Michael Ivanin)
